WALKING

For this command and many more, if you use a collar and a leash, ranging from 6 to 20 feet in length, the teaching lesions can be a bit easier. But they are optional and should be used only as a temporary measure. After all, your basic aim is not to torture or irritate your dog, it is to train him for discipline and fun.

Get him to wear his new collar and make him walk with the collar on daily for a few days. You can do it for, say 2-3 hours daily. Slowly the period can be increased so that he no more realizes the difference between wearing and not wearing a collar, he will be comfortable with it so much. After the collar comes the leash. But first use a soft substitute which could be your old neck tie. Tie it around his collar and make him roam for a day or two like that. Then replace it with the leash. The dog is most likely to chew the leather initially, so you need to supervise. If could be risky as he can get choked. But if you are around, no cause for worry is there. The next day he is ready to be paraded with the leash, but as a leader, you follow him quickly, and keep coaxing him. He'll soon get used to this, and that is the time when you can safely take him for a walk. Keep him to your left and walk close to him. If he struggles, let him. Scold him and he will realize that it is no use resenting a walk. He will start walking quickly by you soon. And when he does, don't forget to treat him with his favourite tidbits and a handful of praise. In fact praising makes him realize that you recognize his efforts and are happy when he obeys you. A dog feels good when he sees his master's acceptance of him.
