THE HEAT CYCLE
First of all every bitch has something called a
'heat' period, which means the time when she is ready to mate and will conceive subsequently. The
'heat' periods occur twice a year and start from the age of six to nine months in an average breed of bitch. You will observe certain physiological changes in the bitch as she enters a
'heat' period. Several details which one must know in this regard follow now.
One heat period will last for around eighteen to twenty days and consist of two stages :
First Stage :- In this the vulva of the bitch gets swollen and there might be an accompanying discharge of blood. The eating habits change and become erratic. The bitch appears beautiful and catches the attention of dogs, i.e. the opposite sex. But she rarely is interested in mating during this stage probably because of the pain and other changes going on in her body. The first stage will last for approximately nine days. Then comes the time for the second stage.
Second Stage :- Now the bitch is fully prepared to conceive. She is ready to mate, and will be interested in dogs. The vulva discharge will have no blood now, and will be pale brown in colour.
The best time for intercourse is as soon as the bleeding from vulva stops. To be precise, the owner should encourage his bitch to mate with the selected dog on the 12th day of the heat period. She is most likely to conceive then.
