TRAININGThis command is used to teach the dog walk on his heels. Keep the dog on your left and initially help him walk on his heels and command
'heel'. After some time, when you say 'heel' he will automatically start walking in that way. At the start, he might start running or may lag behind you since he finds it a bit unusual to walk that way. Teach him how do so by demonstrating it yourself. Then he will naturally follow you. Whenever he tries to run, give him a jerk so that he learns to heel. Talking about a dog's ability to catch your instruction, the breed of
'retriever' can heel quicker than a 'spaniel' variety. The latter will frequently lag behind and might try to wander off when you don't check. The difference is in the temperament, and nothing else. So you need to be more vigilant with a spaniel dog. Remember demonstration it works very quickly. While saying
'heel' point your arm towards the dog's heel. And in a week or so, just pointing a finger at the feet will tell him what is to be done, you need not even say
'heel'.
