MANAGING THE FIRST FEW NIGHTS
As I have mentioned earlier as well, you need to understand that your puppy has suddenly got a change of place and will feel sick for a few days. The nights are going to be the worst, with him crying or whimpering. He will miss his mother and brothers, sisters etc. Now you need to tackle the problem with patience and intelligence.
The first thing to understand is that even in the worst cases, the night crying lasts only for
6-7 days, and after that the puppy will automatically adjust. Now, you don't have to get too emotional, never go to him and pat him, or worse, don't bring him to your bed. If you do it once, the puppy will not leave you. You can order him with a firm
'Quiet' from a distance or praise him after he automatically stops crying.
You can try the following tricks :
1. Wrap a small alarm clock in an old towel and put it in the bed. The ticking will remind the puppy of his littermates heartbeats.
2. Wrap a hot water bottle, filled two thirds with warm water, in an old towel. Put it in his bed to make him think it is his mother's body.
3. Just before the pup is to bed, give him some strenuous exercise to tire him out and then give him a dish of warm milk. He will feel tired sleepy. He will forget to cry and will go to sleep quickly.
