INTERNAL PARASITES
Parasites usually enter the dog's body through infected food and water. Either the parasites or the larva will be taken and would develop into full fledged parasites. Various kinds of parasites include roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms and ringworms. Each worm is characterized by different shapes and sizes with its typical features and harms the dog in its characteristic way.
General symptoms : - Worms usually affect the stomach and the bowel movement. If you see a worm in his faecal matter or in his vomit, its presence is confirmed. Other symptoms include potbelly, vomiting, loose motions, running nose and eyes, coughing and wheezing.
Tapeworm:- They are flat and as small as a rice grain, almost the same in shape as well. Your dog can get it via either fleas or meat. So always give him properly cooked meat and ensure that he is free of fleas, specially in the flea season.
Roundworms :- These are round, cylindrical and long in size, varying from 2 inches long to half a foot in length. Whitish in colour they can be present in a puppy since his birth i.e. inherited from his mother or he might get it later as well. Immunisation develops with age, and you can go for vaccines as well. The cure is a medicine called piperazine, but do consult your vet before use. The first thing to do once you detect worms, is to keep your puppy restrained from food. Then with the vet's advice, get him prescribed to worming, and repeat it within 10-15 days, so as to eliminate even the last-egg worm from his body.
Hookworm :- Generally found in the dog's intestine, hookworms are small in size and suck blood from the innermost wall of the intestine. It affects your dog's health in a serious way and might result in anaemia. Again, the best remedy is prevention as in any other disease. Try to always keep him clean, sanitation should become a habit rather than an occasional pastime. Since these worms normally enter through the mouth, clean and fresh food need attention. Prescription remains the same, worming through the vet's advice.
Ringworm : - It is a yeast-like mould and is in reality a fungus although referred to as a worm. The symptoms are skin lesions and hair loss on affected parts. It affects the outermost skin and so the treatment involves applying ointment there itself. You can use iodine and glycerine mixture or any fungicide, and if that doesn't work; consult your vet. The fungal infection can easily be transmitted to humans by touch. So wash your hands after every touch and don't encourage the dog to come closer until he is all right.
