FEVER
Fever is the condition when the body temperature runs higher than the accepted normal level in a dog. The reason behind it is that the blood circulation increases in the body which in turn increases the body temperature.
The brain is the centre for the thermo-regulatory centre in the dog. The body temperature can come down through dilation of superficial blood vessels of the skin, parting and exposing body to a more cool area. The body mechanism works in such a way that some amount of higher environmental temperature is automatically taken care of by the thermo-regulatory centre. But beyond that, if there is inadequate heat dissipation, the dog may suffer from heat stroke.
Fever generally results from any kind of infection in the body or exposure of body to an unfavourable environmental factor. It is not a disease in itself, however many times it an indication towards some disease.
The normal body temperature elevation of a dog goes till 41.6oC or 107oF. Beyond this the brain might get permanently dysfunctional. Even the kidneys and liver might get affected. There is also a possibility of cardiovascular collapse and shocks.
Without veterinarian assistance the cause of the fever is difficult to diagnose. He will be able to find it out through a thorough check-up.
