CALLING BY NAME

First of all give your puppy a name which is short, pleasant and doesn't rhyme with anybody else's name in the house. Always call him by his name, no matter what, even when you are angry at him. If you are confused about choosing between two or three names, takes the dog's advice. The most appealing to him will be the one he responds most quickly to. And that ought be his name.

Coming to the calling part, he usually would respond favourably whenever called. But there always arise occasions when something more interesting demands his attention and he doesn't come when called. This is when he needs to be taught to pay his attention to you, come what may.
The procedure is a bit clinched, since it is the only way to teach. Take him out for a walk in an open area, with a 20 feet along leash tied to his collar. Let him play away from you. And when you see that he gets busy with something very trilling, call him cheerfully. He doesn't respond. Call loudly and wait. If he reacts positively, praise him. If he doesn't tighten the leash and pull it towards you, giving him a jerk or two. He will surely get the hint. Remember to call out his name with every action of yours. Usually, he will return reluctantly, after all you distracted him from his favourite activity. Offer praise and some reward.

Then let him play again for a while. Repeat the whole procedure again. This trains him effectively and next time onwards he knows that the first thing he is to do whenever being called is to respond at once. And after a few lessons, you won't need a leash to make him obey you. It might take a bit longer than you expect, but remember patience and faith.
