BLOOD PARASITES
The scientific name for heart worm is
'Dirofipriaimmitis'. These are categorically listed under blood parasites but one very rarely noticed as affecting the dogs. That's the reason why the disease caused by them is quite uncommon and hence not much research has been done on the subject. In fact, very few cases of blood parasitis have actually been recorded in Indian veterinary hospitals so far.
Howsoever, one must be aware of the disease and its cure. The worm is around 15-35 cm in length and half centimeter in width. The female worm is longer than the male worm. Their location is in the heart and adjacent blood vessels. The disease is life-threatening once the heart worm hits the dog. The infection normally spreads through mosquitoes. As the worms multiply themselves, the dog will suffer from breathlessness which makes the disease fatal. If a blood vessel gets blocked in the heart, the dog can die of a sudden breathing trouble attack.
If the detection gets done at an early stage, the dog can be treated successfully. The diagnosis is done through blood test. Regular blood test should be done to prevent the threat of late detection, at least once a year. The disease needs intensive research and investigation so that a feasible preventive mechanism could be evolved.
